English version

Lexical Database of Dutch Dialects

The Lexical Database of Dutch Dialects (elektronische Woordenbank van de Nederlandse Dialecten – eWND) is a digital searchable collection of older and more recent Dutch dialect dictionaries.

The eWND aims to give online access to as many dialect dictionaries as possible and to make them searchable, allowing linguists and language lovers to consult all important Dutch dialect dictionaries in one central spot.

All the Dutch-speaking regions

The many dialect dictionaries that have been compiled since the nineteenth century only describe the vocabulary of a certain place or region, but they never cover the complete Dutch-speaking world. This, however, is something that the eWND will eventually accomplish: within the eWND, all existing dictionaries are to be connected into one large network.

Comparing linguistic usage

This will give us a clear insight into the dissemination of dialect words, sounds, conjugations and flexions (such as plurals and diminutives) throughout all of the Dutch-speaking regions. With the eWND it is possible to compare the linguistic usage in different regions. Because the eWND contains both older and more recent dialect dictionaries, changes come to light that dialects have undergone in the course of time. The eWND makes it also possible to find all the forms of a word in all the various dialects, because we have added to each dialect form the standard Dutch form.

The eWND has been set up by Nicoline van der Sijs, after the example of the etymology database. It is hosted by the Dutch Language Institute. The eWND was realized with the support of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, the Toon Weijnen Stichting, de Raod veur ’t Limburgs and the NOW project Time Capsule.
